Lync/OCS 2007 R2 XMPP and Jabber Connectivity

I originally wrote this for my company’s blog but wanted to re-post here as I get quite a few hits from my articles on XMPP.

While working with a client, it was made known they were using an OpenFire Jabber server for IM. Since we have Lync along with the XMPP gateway in order to communicate with GTalk users, it seemed fitting to make it work with OpenFire. That is where the fun began.

Made the point but no difference

This past week I was listening to a podcast and the speaker said many times we would rather make a point than make a difference. He went on to say that many times, making the point will make us feel better but if we don’t make a difference then it didn’t really matter. Not only that but you may have made the point but you may have lost the right to do anything else.

Forefront Threat Management Gateway won't start

Working on a client’s OCS setup and got to the reverse proxy. Did my normal setup for the box and went about installing TMG 2010. Got to the end and it gave an error with the number -2147024891 and said to reboot the box. No matter how many times I rebooted, it didn’t matter, TMG services never started.

After many hours of trying everything I could think of, I tried the install with the machine as a stand-alone server and not a member of the domain. BAM! Everything went in smoothly. Evidently Microsoft wants you to use the TMG 2010 management tools to join the domain for some reason.

OCS 2007 R2 Pre-Call Diagnostic won't install

Got bit by the .NET 4 client again this week. Had a client ask me about installing the Pre-Call Diagnostic tool on a x64 platform as they couldn’t After trying to install on my box I kept getting an error about the UCMA Redistributal needing to be installed. I tried installing this manually and it would just bomb out.

Long story short, uninstalled and bam, the Pre-Call Diag tool installed just fine.

Priorities

If something is truly a priority for you, don’t you go and do it before anything (or most anything) else? Wouldn’t that mean that the inverse is true as well? I.e. if you aren’t doing it first (or close to first) it isn’t really a priority?

The question for today is what should you be doing first that you aren’t? Also, what are you putting off because it really isn’t a priority? Try to recognize what your priorities really are and do them.

Enthusiasm without Knowledge

You can tell I have a small child. I was watching cartoons with him and we were watching a cartoon that tends to have plots based on moral values or proverbs from the Bible. This one was no exception. It was based on Proverbs 19:2:

It is not good to have zeal without knowledge, nor to be hasty and miss the way.

I started think about this and realized how true it is. As I look back on my career thus far, I see this played out time and time again. Many times I have gone head strong into a project or situation without having full knowledge of what I was getting into and every time it has resulted in failure.

What manager's can learn from Darrell Scott leaving CU

In 2008, Darrell Scott was the most highly recruited running back in the nation. He had the world at his feet. Then he went to CU and struggled (this post really isn’t about CU Football, I swear). Injury and other issues mounted. His uncle left CU to go to UCLA. He tried to continue on but evidently it was all just too much. He informed his coaches that he was transferring via text message. So what can managers learn from this? Lots.
